Not sure this belongs here, it's drahma.

Basically, I was in a store and a copybot showed up. She copied me, Phoenix, another random shopper, Vendetta, Rev, Affinity, Beebs, Vivi Odets, and others. The upsetting thing is she bragged she was going to resell the shapes/skins/clothes she bought, and that she could copy prims too, so possibly she got all our attachments as well, though we couldn't see them. She claimed to be the store owner. The really weird thing was that she was able to copybot our profiles and join our groups at the same time.

I thought I took more pictures, but I think it's cause I AR'd her more than once.

This is extremely disturbing. The most disturbing part (which at first i would have thought was stealing my shape) is the joining of groups that were invite only.

What about groups that actually earn money through vendor systems and land and and such? Does this mean some CopyBot can join a group just before payout and get money when the payout occurs?

How can someone join an invite only group? What about groups that have fee's to join and such. So the use of groups to discriminate from regular patrons versus content creator patrons to determine who has access to your full perm content vendors is for the most part circumventable?

This sounds to me as if there is some major whole in the group code.

If group data is constantly streamed between a persons avatar and the server so that the server knows whether or not you are on group land, among other things, (I heard this but not sure if it is true), then that would make group data CopyBot attackable, right? Anything that does not strictly reside on the server and does not get streamed to the client can be copied via CopyBot, right?

Makes me happy I am a recluse, a little.

Then a few minutes later, it was an exact copy of someone else entirely, a few minutes later yet another person. The only part of the profile that didn't change was the av's name.

It was a rather chilling demonstration of the portability of digital information.

It sounds suspiciously like she was using some of the test methods that ship with the libsecondlife source and it's alllll over the web. When I was building the SlickBot (fashionbot) and RoroBot(camperbot) I found these functions.

1) Clone <avaratarname>. This function creates an exact visual duplicate of another avie but nothing else--no prims, no inventory, etc.

2) JoinGroup. does what you think it does. Joining private groups I wasn't aware of, though this thing is so poorly written I could see it.

3) CloneProfile <avatarname> also self explanatory.

I read through the chatlog--it looks for all the world like she used the Follow <avatar name> function (another canned test function), that's why all the bumping was going on. The test client is just a console window where you can type commands, you can't see a thing but you can hear chat and issue commands. Generally you also have a full blown client open as well so you can see what the bot is doing. The person running the bot was probably in the room at the same time (yenyen Later is who I would suspect).

There are a couple more functions for saving and loading data from the local drive that is at the root of a 'copybot'. There are also quite a few object backup systems on SLX that do the same thing; I'm not sure why they're allowed to sell them. Why LL doesn't make the very, very simple changes to cure the problem is one of the biggest fuckovers to their customers that no one talks about. There's no hacking or anything devious going on, all of the methods necessary to do this is in the open source that they've handed out to the world contrary to their own content ownership policies. That being said, I think it's completely legit to take copies of your own shit with you over to OpenSim.

Anyway, sounds like just a kid playing with the testclient.
